Social work names new associate dean, director of Ph.D. program
School of Social Work Dean Bonnie Yegidis has announced the appointment of Larry Nackerud as associate dean for curriculum and instruction and Bruce Thyer as new director of the doctoral program.
“Dr. Nackerud is one of our finest faculty members, having achieved excellence in both his instructional roles and his research contributions since joining our faculty five years ago,” Yegidis said. “He has the strong support of the faculty of the school and the administration of the university.
“Dr. Thyer is one of the most prolific scholars in social work education; therefore his appointment as director of the doctoral program in social work is particularly fitting,” she added. “He is a strong advocate for doctoral education in social work nationally and has a record of scholarship productivity.”
Nackerud, an associate professor, currently is co-principal investigator on a $1.5 million grant that is exploring the effects of welfare reform. He previously served as co-director of the Veracruz (Mexico) International Social Work exchange program. He has been named Teacher of the Year twice by master’s students and once by those in the Ph.D. program in the School of Social Work.
Nackerud earned his Ph.D. in human service studies from Cornell, his master’s of social work from Tulane and his bachelor’s degree in sociology from Luther College.
“I am appreciative of the opportunity provided to me by Dean Yegidis,” Nackerud said. “I know I will learn a lot about how the university works.”
Thyer, who joined the School of Social Work faculty in 1987, holds appointments as Research Professor of Social Work and adjunct professor of psychology at the UGA, as associate clinical professor of psychiatry and health behavior at the Medical College of Georgia, and as visiting professor of social work at the University of Huddersfield in England and at Queen’s University of Belfast in Northern Ireland.
“I am delighted to be able to serve as director of our Ph.D. program since it will allow me to be more closely involved with our top-quality doctoral students, working toward the goal of finding scientifically substantiated solutions to social and interpersonal problems,” Thyer said.
Thyer received his master’s of social work degree from UGA in 1978 and his Ph.D. in social work and psychology from the University of Michigan in 1982.
