Among the four primary U.S. minority groups--blacks, Hispanics, Asians and Americans Indians--consumer buying power nearly doubled in the 1990s and grew at a far faster rate than overall U.S. buying power, according to a new UGA study.


Kiplinger’s magazine ranks UGA among nation’s top public colleges


The University of Georgia is ranked among the nation’s top public colleges in terms of getting the most “bang for the buck” according to Kiplinger’s magazine’s annual ranking, released in the publication’s October issue. UGA ranks 15th, higher than any other school in the state of Georgia, on this year’s list of the top 100 best values in public colleges and universities.

Arthur Dunning became vice president for public service and outreach and associate provost at UGA this July, following 13 years with the University System of Georgia. He spoke with Columns about his plans for the university’s service mission.




One for the books: GALILEO celebrates its fifth anniversary

Five years ago, the concept of an electronic library was virtually unknown. Today libraries everywhere are going “online,” and the state of Georgia is acknowledged as a leader with its system--GALILEO--being used a model for many universities around the country.

Now that fall semester classes are well under way, university officials are taking steps to ensure that all members of the community are aware of UGA’s policies and procedures regarding weather-related closings and changes in operating hours.



Atlanta Symphony Orchestra

A special concert this week--not part of the regular season series--will mark the Athens debut of Robert Spano, the newly appointed Atlanta Symphony Orchestra music director. The concert will begin at 2 p.m. Sept. 24 in Hodgson Hall in the Performing Arts Center. It was originally scheduled for 3 p.m. but has been moved to an hour earlier so that guest pianist Emanuel Ax can fly to New York afterwards to perform later the same day in a Carnegie Hall tribute to renowned violinist Isaac Stern.
