Diversity increases among presidents
More women and minorities are filling presidential positions at U.S. colleges according to a new study by the American Council on Education. The number of female college presidents doubled from 1986 to 1998, while the total number of African-American, Hispanic, Asian-American and Native American presidents increased by 40 percent. Women comprised 19.3 percent of presidents, while minorities made up 11.3 percent. The majority of college presidents are still white males. This information was gathered from a survey of 2,380 presidents during 1998-99.

California aims at credit card vendors
California school officials may soon adopt policies for regulating the marketing and soliciting practices of credit card companies on college campuses.
New legislation passed by state legislators recommends restricting the number of credit card vending sites allowed on a campus. The legislation also recommends that colleges educate students about debt and prohibit vendors from offering gifts unless students have first read these educational materials.
