|
|
|
David E. Kissel, professor of crop and soil sciences, has been appointed head of the agricultural and environmental services laboratories. Kissel, whose appointment was effective June 1, is responsible for the coordination of all analytical and diagnostic services provided by the laboratories, including soil testing, pesticide analysis, forage quality and related testing.
Dean and Director of the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Gale Buchanan says, We are fortunate to have someone of Dr. Kissels breadth of experience to serve as head of the agricultural and environmental services laboratories.
Kissel served as head of the department of crop and soil sciences from 1989 to 1996 and was president of the Soil Science Society of America in 1995. His research has focused on development of a technique for use in mapping the clay and organic matter concentrations of soil using aerial remote sensing images (GIS) and selective soil sampling.
Kissel is also active in a number of professional and honorary societies, including the American Society of Agronomy, the International Union of Soil Science, the Counsel of Agricultural Science and Technology, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. |

Telecommunications prof is named Peabody interim director |
|
Louise Benjamin has been named interim director for the George Foster Peabody Awards. An associate professor of telecommunications, Benjamin succeeds Barry L. Sherman, who died May 2. The Peabody Awards, which recognize outstanding achievement in broadcasting and cable, are housed at the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication.
We are delighted that Dr. Benjamin has agreed to serve in this capacity, says Alison Alexander, head of the department of telecommunications. She brings administrative experience with the Peabody Awards, knowledge of the Peabody board, a national reputation in historical media research and excellent teaching to this position.
After Shermans death, Benjamin stepped forward as associate director, assisting in bringing the May 22 Peabody Awards luncheon to completion. She will continue in this position while a national search for a new Peabody director is conducted.
Benjamin, who earned a Ph.D. at the University of Iowa, has worked as producer, writer and director for WHO-TV, Des Moines, and as a free-lance producer/director. She is completing a book on early broadcast history.
Her research interests include communication history, media law, broadcast news and telecommunication and broadcast policy. She has taught classes in telecommunication history, media law, broadcast advertising, broadcast writing and electronic field production.
