The university has reached an agreement with Alpha Gamma Delta sorority in which the sorority accepts educational requirements in return for the lifting of interim suspension and dropping of judicial proceedings.
The group had been suspended pending investigation of allegations of racial discrimination during recruitment of new members fall semester. A member alleged that an African-American student was denied admission on the basis of race.
By the terms of the settlement, the sorority will undertake to educate its members in racial sensitivity, to ensure that members can report inappropriate comments within the chapter, and to take a leadership role on campus to increase appreciation for racial diversity in social organizations.
The agreement was signed by the president of the sororitys international office in Indianapolis and Richard Mullendore, UGAs vice president for student affairs.
Our goal all along has been to work through this and arrive at an educational solution, Mullendore said in explaining the universitys willingness to drop formal charges. The real work is ahead of us as we try to help not only this sorority but all of our students develop greater tolerance and appreciation for diversity.
Although the sorority had claimed that race was not a factor in the membership selection process, the agreement states that Alpha Gamma Delta recognizes that some of its members may hold personal attitudes towards African-American women which do not reflect the values of Alpha Gamma Delta or the university.
The student who made the allegation in a letter to the university resigned from the sorority and has withdrawn from the university.
