Stanley O. Ikenberry, president of the American Council on Education, visited the university last week to meet with UGA President Michael F. Adams, currently serving a one-year term as chairman of the ACE board of directors.
Ikenberry discussed his view of the challenges and opportunities now facing higher education with members of the media.

Chancellors annual assessment focuses on anti-intellectualism, poor academic preparation
In his annual state of the system address to the board of regents at their September meeting, Chancellor Stephen R. Portch said that an anti-intellectual culture and poor academic preparation continue to thwart Georgias efforts to enhance public higher education, despite the considerable gains of recent years.

A chance encounter on a whale-watching excursion off the coast of Massachusetts in the summer of 1998 led Schell to take two classes of UGA students out to sea--in order to learn more about how to teach students on land.`

UGA India Initiative discussed with prime minister during his U.S. visit
Gary Bertsch, director of UGAs Center for International Trade and Security, met with Indian Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee during his recent visit to the United States to discuss preparations for the universitys India Initiative that will be launched formally early next year.
University, sorority adopt settlement in alleged race discrimination case
The university has reached an agreement with Alpha Gamma Delta sorority in which the sorority accepts educational requirements in return for the lifting of interim suspension and dropping of judicial proceedings.

Shedding light on buried treasures
UGAs Museum of Natural History, founded in 1978 and designated the official state museum of natural history this past year, will invite the public into its current home on East Campus Road on Sept. 30 for its first-ever open house.
