News bureau manager becomes an assistant to president
UGA president Michael F. Adams announced Sept. 22 that Matthew Winston will fill the position of assistant to the president and will join the staff on Oct. 6, pending approval from the board of regents.
Winston brings a decade of experience in advancement and higher education to the position. He joins the president’s office following two years as UGA’s news bureau manager in the University Communications office. As part of his media relations work, Winston coordinated the distribution of news releases for the university’s schools, colleges and other units, and he was the webmaster of the university’s award-winning news and information Web site, UGA Today (www.uga.edu/news).
He served on the strategic planning committee for UGA’s External Affairs division and the university’s Web advisory, policy, design and implementation committee.
Prior to coming to UGA in 1998, Winston did media relations and public relations work for Virginia Tech for eight years, where his duties were similar to those at UGA. Winston provided administrative and public relations support for a variety of university initiatives, including projects in alumni relations, admissions, special events and fund-raising during a capital campaign.
A native of Virginia Beach, Va., Winston earned a bachelor of science degree in marketing management from Virginia Tech in 1990. He has been active with the Council for Advancement and Support of Education for eight years. He received a CASE District III Advancement Newcomers Leadership Development Program Scholarship in 1993 and is currently serving his third consecutive term on the programming committee for CASE’s regional District III Conference. Winston has been a presenter and moderator at several professional conferences including CASE and the Virginia Association of Public Relations and Publications Professionals.
