A team led by UGA scientist B.C. Wang is among seven groups around the nation receiving a grant under a major new initiative developed by the National Institute of General Medical Sciences, part of the National Institutes of Health.

Testing the waters
Two UGA ecologists have developed a rapid method of revealing which streams face land-use pressures and are in urgent need of preservation efforts. The approach could eventually help scientists prioritize certain streams and rivers before development makes conservation efforts more difficult.

Open enrollment period for health insurance coming up
Current and retired university employees will have about a month--from Oct. 16 to Nov. 16--to choose a health insurance plan from among several options that offer varying levels of service but have one common feature: higher costs.
University Council now reviewing strategic plan
The Strategic Planning Committee of University Council is in the process of reviewing the University of Georgia Institutional Strategic Plan: 20002010 and will solicit input from faculty and staff in two public forums set for Oct. 10 and 11.

A study of the universitys classification and pay system is set to move to the second stage after some 900 employees completed surveys about their perceptions of the system.
Sen. Paul Simon
to deliver lecture
Former U.S. Sen. Paul Simon, Center for Humanities and Arts distinguished lecturer, will deliver a lecture at 4 p.m. Oct. 9 in 265 Park Hall. The lecture is free and open to the public.
Simon is now director of the Public Policy Institute and professor of political science and journalism at Southern Illinois University. He was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1974 and to the Senate in 1984; in 1988 he was a candidate for the presidency.
