Dawg Fest 2000

From the Varsity restaurant to downtown streets to campus lawns and Sanford Stadium, UGA students and alumni will be partying with food, fun and football as UGA celebrates Homecoming Oct. 8–14.
“Dawg Fest 2000—A New Beginning to an Old Tradition” is the theme of this year’s celebration, sponsored by the student activities department and the National Alumni Association.

Nothing finer in the land

For many years, the motto of UGA’s marching band has been:
There’s nothing finer in the land
Than the Georgia Redcoat marching band.
During halftime at the Homecoming game Oct. 14, the band will receive proof of the accuracy of that motto in the form of the Sudler Trophy, the highest honor a collegiate marching band can receive.

University employees and retirees will be able to get information about new options for health insurance and prescription drug coverage, and to ask questions, on Oct. 10, when the Human Resources Division holds an informational meeting at 2:30 p.m. in the law school auditorium. Columns spoke with David Williamson, director of employee benefits, about the new plans.


Grant funds project to re-train teachers for today’s classroom

The University of Georgia is one of eight institutions around the nation awarded grants from the U.S. Department of Education to better train teachers for the challenges of today’s classrooms. The grants were announced Sept. 21 by Secretary of Education Richard W. Riley.


Dyer assumes ‘official’ title of vice president for instruction

The Strategic Planning Committee of University Council is in the process of reviewing the “University of Georgia Institutional Strategic Plan: 2000–2010” and will solicit input from faculty and staff in two public forums set for Oct. 10 and 11.

McBee Lecturer to discuss sport in American society

Barbara A. Hedges, athletic director at the University of Washington, will deliver this year’s Louise McBee Lecture at 1:30 p.m. Oct. 12 in the Chapel. Her topic will be “The Value of Sport in Our Society.”
The lecture will be followed by a panel discussion moderated by Vince Dooley, athletic director. The panelists, all from UGA, are Billy Hawkins, physical education and sports studies; Paul Kurtz, law; Susette Talarico, political science; and Stephanie Yarem, athletics.


Mike Nicholson: Selected paintings and poems

Mike Nicholson, one of the most popular artists in Athens, died from a rare disorder in 1987 leaving friends grieving for a man of many talents. Those talents will be showcased in this special exhibition in the gallery in the visual arts building now through Nov. 10. A reception for the show will take place Oct. 29 at 1 p.m. in the gallery.
A silent auction of selected works on Oct. 29 will present an opportunity for those who would like to acquire some of Nicholson’s work. All proceeds from the auction will go to establish a scholarship in Nicholson’s name to the Lamar Dodd School of Art’s program in Cortona.
