McBee Lecturer to discuss sport in American society
Barbara A. Hedges, athletic director at the University of Washington, will deliver this year’s Louise McBee Lecture at 1:30 p.m. Oct. 12 in the Chapel. Her topic will be “The Value of Sport in Our Society.”
The lecture will be followed by a panel discussion moderated by Vince Dooley, athletic director. The panelists, all from UGA, are Billy Hawkins, physical education and sports studies; Paul Kurtz, law; Susette Talarico, political science; and Stephanie Yarem, athletics.
Barbara Hedges joined the University of Washington as director of athletics in 1991. Under her leadership UW has emphasized athletic excellence. She has been influential in making Washington a national leader in gender equity, in participation for student-athletes and compliance, and in commitment to a high level of academic achievement of the student-athlete population. UW is in the final phase of its “Campaign for the Student-Athlete,” which has generated over $80 million in capital improvements, and under her direction has made significant improvements to the physical facilities used by student-athletes.
Hedges has served as president of the Council of Collegiate Women Athletic Administrators, the Western Collegiate Athletic Association, and the Division I-A Women’s Athletic Administrators. She served on the three-member NCAA Special Television Committee to negotiate the NCAA rights for all sports except football and basketball with ESPN, ABC, CBS and international television. In 1996-97 she was the first woman to serve as president of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics, and in 1998 she was named the first woman on the board of directors for the National Football Foundation. She has served as the chair of the NCAA Honors Committee and has served on the executive committee of the Division I-A Athletic Directors’ Association and the Blue Ribbon Task Force for College Football USA.
Before she joined the University of Washington, she served in college athletics at the University of Southern California (1973-91) and the University of Arizona (1968-73).
The McBee Lectureship in Higher Education was established in 1988 to honor Louise McBee, vice president for academic affairs emerita at UGA. The lectureship is filled annually by a distinguished scholar or public figure in the field of higher education.
