University Theatre presents premiere
The next University Theatre production will be The Bridegroom of Blowing Rock by M.F.A. student playwright Catherine Trieschmann. The play will be performed in the Cellar Theatre of the Fine Arts Building at 8 p.m. Oct. 18-21 and 2:30 p.m. Oct. 21-22.
The Bridegroom of Blowing Rock is set in southern Appalachia and tells the darkly comic story of young people trying to shape their lives and loves in the aftershock of the Civil War. The effect is sometimes comic, sometimes stirring and moving.
Trieschmann’s plays Art in Heaven and Black Water Delta have been produced at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the NeWorks Festival at the Boston Center of the Arts. Her Before the Fire was part of last year’s University Theatre season.
University Theatre’s production of The Bridegroom of Blowing Rock will be entered in the American College Theatre Festival and will be directed by Rachel May, the director and founder of Synchronicity Performance Group. May has also directed for other Atlanta theaters, including Actors Express, Dad’s Garage and Theatre Gael.
The Bridegroom of Blowing Rock will be presented at the Cellar Theatre in the Fine Arts Building. Tickets--$10 for regular admission and $8 for students and senior citizens--are on sale at the University Theatre box office, located in the lobby of the Fine Arts Building. Box office hours are noon to 5 p.m., Monday-Friday. During those hours, the box office can be reached at 542-2838. If available, tickets may also be purchased one hour prior to showtime at the theater.
