The Carl Vinson Institute of Government has expanded its already extensive Web site with a series of historical maps of Georgia counties, complete with basic background information.
When did the county seat of Clarke County move from Watkinsville to Athens? In 1871, following years of campaigning by Athens residents. What was the response of Watkinsville residents? Within four years, they had convinced the state legislature to divide Clarke County in two, making Watkinsville the county seat of the newly created Oconee County.
From the various county maps the viewer can link to county courthouses and historic markers.
