Kowal selected NCAA Woman of the Year

Kristy Kowal, a former Georgia swimmer and silver medalist at the 2000 Olympic Games, was named the 2000 NCAA Woman of the Year at an awards dinner in Indianapolis Oct. 15. The award honors outstanding female student-athletes who have excelled in academics, athletics and community leadership. UGA becomes the first institution to have multiple award winners. The late Lisa Coole, also a former UGA swimmer, was honored as the NCAA Woman of the Year in 1997. Kowal paid tribute to Coole in her acceptance speech.
Kowal is a seven-time NCAA individual champion and holds eight American, one world and three U.S. open records. An early childhood education major, Kowal received the 2000 Peach of an Athlete Award from the Atlanta Boy Scouts for her volunteer efforts with the Safe Kids project, homeless shelter and soup kitchen.
