New guide helps parents of freshmen
Recognizing that parents are one of the most important factors in college success, the National Orientation Directors Association and the National Resource Center for the First-Year Experience and Students in Transition have produced a guide for use by parents of college students. It was written by UGA Vice President for Student Affairs Richard Mul-lendore and Cathie Hatch, coordinator of orientation at Bemidji State University in Bemidji, Minn.
Unlike other college guides that encourage parents just to “let go,” this guide offers practical advice on how parents can help their students make a successful transition to college. The guide provides an overview of the student perspective on topics including, moving to campus; developing attitudes for college success; setting goals; getting involved on campus and accessing campus resources; developing responsibility for personal health, safety and money management. Beyond this, each section highlights practical strategies for parents to help students succeed in college.
As students settle into the routine of college, parents may begin to feel cut off from their students’ lives. This guide provides them with information, and reassurance, about typical first-semester experiences, while providing suggestions on how to remain involved.
