College for home-schoolers opens
Patrick Henry College, a new Virginia college geared toward home-schooled Christians, opened for classes on Oct. 2. Out of the 84 students that comprise the college’s student body, only 14 were not exclusively home-schooled during their high school years.
The school was created to provide students with a liberal education, a Christian focus, and apprenticeships in government jobs, says college president Michael P. Farris. All of the students who make up the college’s inaugural class are required to be government majors. All students are also required to abide by an honor code that includes attending daily chapel services, following a dress code and obtaining parental permission to date.
Total tuition and housing costs are $15,000.

Harvard endowment tops $19 billion
Harvard University’s endowment grew to approximately $19.2 billion last year, a 32.2 percent gain during the 2000 fiscal year.
The Harvard Management Group, which oversees the endowment, attributes these gains to the success of the university’s private equities. Unlike most colleges, Harvard tends to invest heavily in private equities as part of the investment strategy.
Harvard currently has the largest endowment in the United States.
