GEORGE I. BUSH
Buyer
Procurement Department

YEARS: Four years, eight months.

WHAT I DO: “I bid and buy commodities for the University System of Georgia; these commodities include electrical supplies and equipment, hardware and building materials and heating and air conditioning items, among others.”

TYPICAL DAY: “Much of my day is spent coordinating and transacting activities necessary for obtaining procurement requirements; I review bids and handle a lot of phone calls, faxes, electronic and hard copy purchase requests.”

IF I WASN’T DOING THIS JOB, I’D MOST LIKE TO: “Go back to the private sector. Most of my work experience is in procurement activity and marketing, so I’d probably be working in business.”

OFF-THE-JOB INTERESTS: “I am a spectator for many sports, particularly football, but also baseball, basketball and the others.
“The best game that I have ever attended was back in 1980, which was Herschel Walker’s freshman year, when Georgia played Tennessee in Neyland Stadium in Knoxville. The second half was very exciting; I think we came back from 15 or 16 points down to win the game.
“I also enjoy working with wood and handicrafts. I use a bent saw and some power tools to make whatnots and most any type of animal.
“Additionally, I sing in the choir at my church and I am an ordained deacon.”

PEOPLE I ADMIRE:
“Billy Graham, my wife Helen, and my two sons--George III (Skeeter) and Charles Allen (Chip). All of these people are honest, trustworthy and aggressive in responding to the challenges in life. Both of my sons have matured in life and advanced in business.”

FAVORITE MUSIC: “Quartet Gospel music, regardless of who’s singing. I grew up with this kind of music, and I enjoy the Statler Brothers--I like their style.”

BOOKS I’D RECOMMEND: “I read the Holy Bible regularly, but not as often as I feel I probably should.
First Blood by David Morrell is a very interesting non-fiction book that held my attention all the way through. I am not a very good reader, and it’s hard for a book to hold my attention--this one did.”

AN ISSUE THAT CONCERNS ME MOST ABOUT TODAY’S WORLD: “People who seem to be taking life for granted; I think people should seek a better understanding of what our purpose in life here on Earth should be.”
