Jennifer Ceska, conservation coordinator at the State Botanical Garden, received the Professional Citation Award from the American Association of Botanical Gardens and Arboreta.
The AABGA award is given annually to an individual who has significantly advanced the field of public horticulture. Ceska’s collaborative efforts in sharing her interest in native plants and her outstanding contributions to the fields of education, research and outreach--including her statewide coordination of the Georgia Plant Conservation Alliance--have gained her wide recognition in the field.
Ceska has written several articles about plant conservation and bog restoration, has served as co-chair of the AABGA’s conservation committee and worked on the group’s program committee for the past three years.

The Peanut Yield Monitoring System developed by the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Precision Agriculture Team--scientist Jeffrey Durrence, agricultural research engineer Calvin Perry, professor of biological and agricultural engineering Dan Thomas and associate professor of biological and agricultural engineering George Vellidis--was selected as one of the year’s top 50 outstanding innovations by ASAE, the Society for Engineering in Agricultural, Food and Biological Systems. According to ASAE, “products winning this year’s awards represent the cream of the crop developed throughout the world.”

Dave Harrington, marine fisheries specialist at the Marine Extension Service, received the 2000 Environmental Hero Award for his work with soft turtle-excluder devices. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s National Marine Fisheries Service, which presents the award, Harrington’s “commitment to getting soft TEDs approved for fisheries to use has made a significant contribution to the sustainable use of living marine resources and encouraged an ethic of stewardship in one of our nation’s most valuable fisheries. [Harrington’s] continued efforts in by-catch reduction demonstrates his commitment to stewardship and conservation.”

Rayburn Moore,
formerly a professor in the English department, has won the John Hurt Fisher Award, which honors scholars and creative writers over the course of their careers. It is given by the South Atlantic Region of the Modern Language Association. Previous recipients of the Fisher Award include Cleanth Brooks, Louis Rubin Jr. and Margaret Walker-Alexander. Moore retired from UGA in 1990.

Walter Reeves, public service associate for the Cooperative Extension Service, received the Ryan F. Gainey Award from the Southeastern Flower Show. Named for a longtime supporter of the show, the award is given by the organization’s board of trustees to a professional who has continuously given time and professional expertise to the flower show over the years. Reeves hosts the Lawn and Garden Show on News/Talk 750 WSB. For this year’s flower show, he organized and led an information garden staffed by Master Gardeners and UGA extension agents.

Kudos recognizes special contributions staff, faculty and administrators are making in teaching, research and service. News items are limited to election in national and international societies; election into offices of state, regional, national and international societies; major awards and prizes; and similarly notable accomplishments.
