Anthony G. Brantley, who has held the top human resources position at two North Carolina colleges in the past 10 years, has been chosen to be the new associate vice president for human resources at the University of Georgia.
Brantley, currently the assistant vice president for business administration and director of human resources at Davidson College, in Davidson, N.C., will succeed Loretta Harper, who left UGA this fall to become vice president for human resources at the University of Utah.
His appointment, announced by Henry Huckaby, senior vice president for finance and administration, is effective Jan. 1, 2001, pending approval by the University System of Georgia Board of Regents.
Brantley has been at Davidson since 1994. Previously he was director of personnel and affirmative action at the University of North Carolina at Asheville for four years, and before that was employment manager at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte for a year.
He holds two degrees from UGA’s Terry College of Business--a bachelor of business administration with a concentration in industrial relations and an M.B.A. He is currently national president of the College and University Personnel Association, the top professional organization for human resources officials.
“I am extremely pleased that we are able to attract someone with Mr. Brantley’s experience and excellent record of accomplishments to this important position at UGA,” says Huckaby. “Andy’s vision, energy and collaborative management style will serve him well in providing thoughtful and effective leadership of the human resources function at the university.”
As associate vice president, Brantley will be responsible for all UGA personnel-related programs, including staff recruitment, classification, compensation, insurance and other benefits, retirement plans, and training and development. He will manage a staff of 50 that administers more than $78 million annually in benefits.
One of his immediate tasks will be overseeing two crucial initiatives now under way that affect UGA employees. All active and retired faculty and staff members are choosing health insurance and drug prescription plans that will become effective Jan. 1. And a study of the university’s 20-year-old pay and classification system is likely to result in recommendations for changes in job titles, descriptions and pay ranges that will be implemented over several years.
Brantley joined Davidson College in 1994 as director of human resources and last year also became assistant vice president for business administration--the only person at the college to hold the title of assistant or associate vice president. He created a performance planning and review process for the college’s non-faculty employees, implemented an integrated human resources system, and was Davidson’s representative to the equity and diversity committee of the Southern Conference Athletic Association.
