Program proposals sought for Black History Month
UGA’s Black History Month committee has begun planning for next February’s celebration, and invites program proposals from UGA units. The theme will be “Black History: From Milestones to New Motivations,” and the committee will produce a commemorative calendar of the month’s events.
Departments which are interested in sponsoring a Black History Month event should send program title, date, location and brief description to the committee (Office of Minority Services and Programs, 404 Memorial Hall) by Dec. 1. The programming subcommittee will review all proposals and will make every attempt to avoid overlapping programs.
For additional information, call Shirley Reyes, 542-5773.

Master Gardener class applications being taken
The 20-session Master Gardener program at the State Botanical Garden offers an intensive study of horticultural principles and practices and pest management. Topics range from soils and nutrition to vegetable gardening and landscaping. This year’s classes will be held Tuesday and Thursday evenings, Jan. 9-March 20, 6:15-8:30 p.m. Cost is $100. Certified Master Gardeners may attend individual sessions for $5 per session.
Space is limited, and students will be selected through an application process. Applications must be returned by Nov. 17.
In order to be certified as a Master Gardener, participants must pass a final exam and agree to return 50 hours of volunteer service to their communities during 2001. Service may consist of answering questions in an extension office, helping conduct gardening clinics, working on community beautification projects or assisting at the State Botanical Garden.
The Master Gardener program is administered statewide by the Cooperative Extension Service. In the Athens area, the program is sponsored by the State Botanical Garden.
For more information or an application, call Kandy Duke at 542-6195.
