Jury finds for plaintiffs in equal pay case against board of regents, UGA
A federal jury decided Oct. 26 that three female employees at the University of Georgia should be compensated for receiving a lower salary when they were hired than that paid to two male employees hired at a later date. The university contended that the salary differential was justified because the two male employees brought greater experience to their positions and more was expected of them in their jobs.
The amount to be awarded to the plaintiffs in the Equal Pay Act case has not yet been determined. Senior Vice President for External Affairs Kathryn Costello said administrators were “very surprised” by the verdict, but that it was too early to know whether the school would appeal.

Elegant Salute raises $563,779
A total of $563,779 was raised at the Georgia Museum of Art’s biennial Elegant Salute Oct. 21. Sponsored by the Friends of the Georgia Museum of Art, this year’s event drew 242 guests from across the state. The money raised supports programs, exhibitions and phase II of the building program for the museum.
Museum director William U. Eiland said the evening was one of the most successful of the museum’s biennial fundraisers. Proceeds from past Elegant Salutes have funded educational events, the museum’s Rembrandt and San Carlos Museum of Art exhibitions and also helped erect the building the museum has occupied since 1996.
Eiland praised the efforts of Devereux Cain Burch of Athens, who served as chair of Elegant Salute VII, and also thanked honorary chairs Gov. and Mrs. Roy Barnes and the dozens of volunteers and staff members who made the event possible. M. Smith Griffith, founder and chair of the first five Elegant Salute events, served as chair emeritus.

School of Music wins national award
The School of Music has won first prize in the 2000 National Federation of Music Clubs annual award program for the performance and promotion of American music.
Public and private music schools throughout the United States entered the competition in separate categories. The award recognizes outstanding accomplishment in the study, promotion, and performance of American music and carries a cash award of $500 for music scholarships.
Among the visitations, clinics, workshops and performances devoted to American music during the 1999-2000 school year were the premieres of commissioned works by Aldo Rafael Forte, Ed Huckeby and Carlton Macy. The School of Music’s strong commitment to American music is evident in the more than 400 works of American music that were performed at UGA during the 1999-2000 year. Over half of the programs featured at least one work by an American composer.
This is the fourth time that UGA has won first prize in this competition. Professor Roger Vogel, who has coordinated the UGA entry since 1983, notes that UGA won honorable mention in 1983, 1989, 1994 and 1995 as well as first prize in 1984, 1992 and 1996.
