Patricia L. Kalivoda, who currently oversees faculty development and teaching improvement programs at the university, has been named assistant vice president for special programs in the Division of Academic Affairs.
Kalivoda, who is coordinator of faculty development in the Office of Instructional Support and Development and an adjunct assistant professor in the Institute of Higher Education, will fill the position left vacant by Carol Winthrop’s retirement earlier this year.
Karen Holbrook, senior vice president for academic affairs and provost, has announced that the appointment is effective Nov. 1, pending approval by the University System Board of Regents.
Kalivoda will be responsible for managing major university academic events, including commencement, Honors Day, Opening Convocation, the Charter Lecture series and the Faculty Recognition Banquet. She will also coordinate the university’s top recognition programs for teaching excellence, including the Josiah Meigs, Richard Russell and Regents Teaching awards.
Other duties include working with the undergraduate admissions office on summer orientation and special recruitment efforts, helping review and assist academic programs presented by campus units, managing the Study in a Second Discipline program and State-of-the-Art Conference grants, and representing academic affairs on several university committees and advisory groups.
“Dr. Kalivoda will be an excellent addition to academic affairs,” Holbrook says. “She will step right in and pick up the program very skillfully. I look forward to her own imprint on the position as well.”
Kalivoda holds three degrees from UGA and has worked her entire professional career at the university. She received a bachelor’s degree in language education in 1981, an M.B.A. with a concentration in finance in 1983, and a doctorate in higher education in 1993.
She joined the Office of Instructional Support and Development in 1989 as a graduate assistant. She became a specialist in faculty development programs in 1992 and has been coordinator of faculty development since 1997.
She has been editor of the OISD newsletter and the office’s “Keys to Professional and Personal Development for Faculty” series, and managed the office’s faculty development Web sites.
In the Institute of Higher Education, she has taught a seminar for graduate teaching and laboratory assistants and was a co-teacher for a graduate course on the American professoriate.
