Driver Improvement program offered
The Environmental Safety Division is now taking applications for the AAA Driver Improvement Program. The six-hour course will be taught in two three-hour sessions on Nov. 30 and Dec. 1, 9 a.m.-noon, in the CCRC auditorium on Riverbend Road. The class is free for UGA employees (spouses and children are not eligible). Sign up online at www.esd.uga.edu or call 542-0113.

Flu shots
Although manufacturing problems have caused delays in the arrival of flu vaccine this year, the University Health Center is planning to begin its flu clinic for staff, faculty, and emeritus faculty on Nov. 14. The cost is $5 per shot. Appointments will be available on Tuesday-Friday 8:30-11:30 a.m. Walk-in times are 1-4:30 p.m. on Tuesdays-Fridays (no walk-ins will be taken during Thanksgiving week). Call before coming to check the availability of the vaccine.
The health center will offer shots at mobile sites around campus. Look for information about times and places in a future issue of Columns.
The University Health Center is located on three campus bus routes. Patient parking is available in the adjacent lot. To make an appointment, call 542-8666.

Changes in H visa regulations
On Oct. 17, President Clinton signed legislation which will greatly relieve recent difficulties universities have experienced in bringing international faculty, researchers and staff to the United States in the H visa category.
In the past, there have been numerical limitations on the number of H visas available each government year (Oct. 1-Sept. 30), and the cap has recently often been reached by the time educational institutions were beginning to hire for fall semester.
In brief summary, the new legislation provides that the H-lB visa cap will not apply to anyone employed by a college or non-profit research organization. An H visa is normally allowed for a maximum period of six years, but individuals who have applied for permanent residency will be permitted to extend their employment beyond this six-year period until the “green card” is received. In addition, H-lB visa holders will now be allowed to begin work for a new employer at the time a petition to transfer employers is submitted.
For detailed additional information about these changes in the H visa regulations, contact Mary Ann Kelly in the Office of International Education (542-7903, makelly@uga.edu). She is also available to attend departmental meetings to provide information and updates on immigration matters.

Reserve library materials
The “guarantee” deadline to submit requests for materials to be placed on reserve at the main and science libraries for spring semester 2001 is Dec. 1. Materials submitted by this date will be ready for class use by Jan. 8.
Materials received after Dec. 1 will be processed as quickly as possible in the order in which they are received. Faculty and teaching graduate students should have received a letter about reserves, along with a form to submit a reserve list, through campus mail by Nov. 1. Reserve lists may also be submitted electronically from the libraries’ home page (www.libs.uga.edu/maincirc/resform.html).
For further information, contact the main library at 542-0639 (mainresv@uga.edu) or the science library at 542-4535 (sciresv@uga.edu).

New ‘UGA MyID’ for electronic services
Having a single username and password with which to access electronic services at UGA can make life easier, so University Computing and Networking Services has implemented a single sign-on called “UGA MyID.”
The electronic services available with “UGA MyID” include WebCT, Arches e-mail and WebMail, Arches Web space and MyUGA (when available). Other electronic services will be available as they are added to the system.
Users can make use of “UGA MyID” for any or all of the services available.
For those who already have an Arches account, nothing additional need be done. The Arches ID is now “MyID,” to be used as it always was for e-mail and Web space, and now also for additional services.
Those who do not have an Arches account can create a “UGA MyID” at www.uga.edu/myid. For additional information, contact the UCNS Helpdesk (helpdesk@uga.edu, 542-3106).

Bulletin Board prints announcements from campus-based organizations whose membership includes UGA faculty and/or staff. Send notices by e-mail, campus mail (A-205 Stegeman Coliseum, Campus Mail 4371) or fax (542-8020).
