State Board of Education Chairman Otis Brumby, former Gov. Joe Frank Harris, and UGA swimming coach Jack Bauerle will be honored by the university’s chapter of Blue Key national

honor society Nov. 17.
They will receive the Blue Key Award at the chapter’s annual banquet at the Georgia Center for Continuing Education. Brumby will be the featured speaker at the banquet, which begins with a 6 p.m. reception followed by dinner at 7 p.m.
The Blue Key Young Alumnus Award will be presented to Anne Proffitt Dupre, an associate professor in the School of Law. In addition, winners of the Tucker Dorsey Memorial Scholarship will be announced.
The Blue Key national honor fraternity was founded in 1924 at the University of Florida and has more than 300 chapters throughout the United States. The UGA chapter, which was started in 1926 as the second chapter in the nation, presents the Blue Key award to distinguished Georgians who have made major contributions to the state and the university. The award has been given since 1964.
Brumby, a graduate of UGA’s law school, is publisher of the Marietta Daily Journal and Neighbor Newspapers, Inc. He previously was on the Marietta school board, and Gov. Roy Barnes appointed him chairman of the state school board after the previous chairman, Johnny Isakson, left the post to run for the U.S. Congress.
Brumby has served on the board of the Georgia Department of Transportation and is a past president of the Georgia Press Association and the Cobb County and Georgia Bar Associations. He is president of the Brumby Chair Co. and is a director of the First Union National Bank and the Atlanta Gas Light Co. He is a managing trustee of the UGA Foundation.
Harris’s two terms as governor, from 1983 to 1991, were marked by improvements in education, especially passage of the Quality Basic Education Act, and by economic growth in Georgia. After leaving office, he joined Georgia State University as the first Distinguished Executive Fellow and professor of public administration and urban studies. Last year Barnes appointed Harris to the University System Board of Regents.
Before being elected governor, Harris--who received a business degree from UGA in 1958--served 18 years in the Georgia House of Representatives, where he was chairman of the Appropriations Committee. He is chairman of the Harris Georgia Corp. and serves on the board of directors of American Family Life Assurance Corp. He is an emeritus trustee of the UGA Foundation.
Bauerle was a four-year letterman on UGA’s swimming team and graduated in 1975 with an English degree. He became coach of the women’s swim team in 1979 and also took over coaching the men’s team in 1983. His combined career coaching record of 266-72-1 is the best in Southeastern Conference history.
A three-time national Coach of the Year and nine-time SEC Coach of the Year, he has coached four Olympic gold medalists. The UGA women’s swimming and diving team won back-to-back national championships in 1999 and 2000. Many of Bauerle’s swimmers have made All American, and two of his swimmers have been named NCAA Woman of the Year. He was an assistant coach for the U.S. swimming team that won a record 33 medals in this year’s Sydney Olympics.
The Young Alumnus Award honors alumni who made significant contributions to the university as a student and to their communities since graduation. Dupre graduated first from UGA’s law school in 1988. She was a clerk for U.S. Supreme Court Justice Harry Blackmun and for a judge of the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals, and worked with a private law firm in Washington, D.C. Since joining the UGA law faculty in 1994, Dupre has been a Lilly Teaching Fellow and a UGA International Fellow, and won the law school’s Faculty Book Award for teaching excellence.
The Tucker Dorsey Memorial Scholarship is named for the deceased son of the late Jasper Dorsey, a Southern Bell executive and UGA graduate and alumni leader who strongly supported Blue Key.
