Embracing teaching

Following a year of planning by a small group of faculty, the university’s new Teaching Academy held its first workshop-meeting Nov.3 at Flinchum’s Phoenix. The “charter members” of the original planning group and the 52 new members discussed academy goals, plans and possibilities.



Honor society presents Blue Key Award to four UGA alumni


State Board of Education Chairman Otis Brumby, former Gov. Joe Frank Harris, and UGA swimming coach Jack Bauerle will be honored by the university’s chapter of Blue Key national honor society Nov. 17.
They will receive the Blue Key Award at the chapter’s annual banquet at the Georgia Center for Continuing Education. Brumby will be the featured speaker at the banquet, which begins with a 6 p.m. reception followed by dinner at 7 p.m.
The Blue Key Young Alumnus Award will be presented to Anne Proffitt Dupre, an associate professor in the School of Law.


A worthy cause

Rebecca Greenspan finds the honor a little daunting--and exciting. She is the first student accepted in the university’s new program leading to a master of arts degree in non-profit organizations.



University Council approval sought for strategic plan


The University Council will be asked to approve an ambitious institutional strategic plan for the first decade of the 21st century at its Nov. 16 meeting.

Egerton, award-winning journalist, will deliver Ralph McGill Lecture

John Egerton, a free-lance journalist and author of the award-winning book Speak Now Against the Day: The Generation Before the Civil Rights Movement in the South, will deliver the 23rd Ralph McGill Lecture on Nov. 15 at 10:30 a.m. in the Chapel. His speech is entitled “McGill’s Army: Civil Rights Reporting, Then and Now.”

The Crucible
The Crucible will be presented in the Fine Arts Theatre Nov.15-17 and Nov. 28-Dec. 2 at 8 p.m., and Nov. 19 at 2:30 p.m. Tickets are $12 for regular admission and $10 for students. Tickets are available at the box office in the lobby of the Fine Arts Building. Box office hours are noon-5 p.m., Monday-Friday. During those hours, the box office can be reached at 542-2838.
