The Crucible opens Nov. 15
The University Theater’s production of Arthur Miller’s The Crucible opens Nov. 15. Katherine Sanderlin plays Elizabeth Proctor, Colter Allison (seated) plays Rev. John Hale and Steve Emanuels plays John Proctor.
One of the most popular plays of the modern American theater, The Crucible is set in Salem, Mass., in 1692. Miller draws parallels between the accusations of witchcraft in Puritan Massachusetts and the antiCommunist “witch hunts” conducted by Congress in the 1950s.
Director Farley Richmond takes a classical approach to Miller’s script. Setting and costuming reflect the late 1600s. The production will be the thesis project for two actors and two designers, for whom the play will represent the culmination of their graduate training.
The Crucible will be presented in the Fine Arts Theatre Nov. 15-17 and Nov. 28-Dec. 2 at 8 p.m., and Nov. 19 at 2:30 p.m. Tickets are $12 for regular admission and $10 for students. Tickets are available at the box office in the lobby of the Fine Arts Building. Box office hours are noon-5 p.m., Monday-Friday. During those hours, the box office can be reached at 542-2838.
