Four candidates have been chosen as finalists for the position of vice president for research and associate provost at the university.
Svein Oie, dean of the College of Pharmacy and chair of the committee conducting a national search to fill the post, has announced that the finalists are:
John N. Reeve, chair of the microbiology department at Ohio State University;
Colin G. Scanes, interim director of the Plant Science Institute and executive associate dean of the College of Agriculture at Iowa State University;
Tony G. Waldrop, vice chancellor for research at the University of Illinois; and
P. Michael Conn, president of STAR Park, Inc., in Beaverton, Ore., and associate director and senior scientist at the Oregon Regional Primate Research Center.
The candidates are visiting UGA to meet with other vice presidents and administrators. They are also making brief presentations and answering questions at open meetings for all interested faculty and staff members. Three of these meetings have already taken place: with Reeve on Nov. 15, with Scanes on Nov. 16, and with Waldrop on Nov. 21.
Conns presentation will be Dec. 6 at 3 p.m. in the pharmacy auditorium.
Reeve is the Rod Sharp Professor of Microbiology and professor of molecular, cellular and developmental biology at Ohio State, where he has been on the faculty since 1979. He holds a bachelor of science degree from the University of Birmingham in England and a doctorate from the University of British Columbia, and has been a distinguished visiting professor at universities in six countries.
Scanes is also associate director of the Iowa Agricultural and Home Economics Experiment Station. He was chairman of the animal sciences department at Rutgers University before joining Iowa State in 1995. He received a bachelors degree from Hull University and a doctorate from the University of Wales, both in the United Kingdom.
Waldrop has been at the University of Illinois since 1982 except for a years sabbatical. He has been vice chancellor for research since March. He has also been interim vice chancellor for research and interim dean of the Graduate College, acting regional dean of the College of Medicine and director of the Medical Scholars Program in the College of Medicine and Graduate College. He holds three degrees from the University of North Carolina--a bachelors in political science, a masters in physical education and a doctorate in physiology.
Conn is also special assistant to the president and professor of physiology and pharmacology at the Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland. Previously he was head of the pharmacology department at the University of Iowa College of Medicine, and a pharmacology professor at Duke University Medical Center. He received a bachelors degree from the University of Michigan, a masters from North Carolina State University and a doctorate from the Baylor College of Medicine.
The new vice president for research and associate provost will succeed Joe Key, who is retiring Nov. 30. Gordhan Patel, dean of the Graduate School, will be interim vice president until a new vice president is chosen. Oie says he hopes the selection can be made before Jan. 1. |
