The university has officially opened the Baxter Street esplanade, a stretch of sidewalk and landscape improvements that have made busy Baxter Street safer and more attractive for pedestrians.
The UGA Pep Band and bulldog mascot Uga VI were on hand for the ribbon cutting at 4 p.m. Nov. 17. The ceremony took place in the Creswell Hall parking lot near the corner of Baxter and Finley streets.
The esplanade is a stretch of about 2,000 feet along the south side of Baxter between Church and Lumpkin streets. It is heavily used by UGA students who live in residence halls along Baxter and eat in the Bolton Hall cafeteria.
The new sidewalk is wide enough to accommodate both pedestrians and bicycles. The fence prevents pedestrians from crossing Baxter Street except at intersections.
The project cost about $400,000, which UGA’s physical plant division provided from internal funds. David Hale, a physical plant landscape architect, designed the project, and Kimo Polster supervised the construction, which was carried out by physical plant workers.
