The 16th J.W. Fanning Lecture was held Nov. 14 as part of the fall meeting of the Agricultural Economics Association of Georgia.
The lecture, “Water Resources Management: A Critical Issue for the 21st Century,” was delivered by Virgil Norton, manager of the Upper Republican River Natural Resources District in Imperial, Neb., with responses dealing with Georgia’s water management issues delivered by Harold F. Reheis, director of the Environmental Protection Division of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, and Murray Campbell, a producer from Camilla. Some excerpts from Campbell’s talk:
“Agriculture is the heart of the economy in southwest Georgia, and irrigation is the life blood of agriculture. It’s a very important issue. . . . Dryland farming is a joke in south Georgia. We live and die by our access to water. . . .
“Georgia water law is going to be rewritten. Georgia agriculture will be at the table and we are going to have to be good stewards of this natural resource. Agriculture intends to not only be that, but to lead the charge. . . .
“Agriculture in this country is going to be in serious trouble if we don’t figure out the water issue.”
