Slowdown starting to hit home

For the past two years, the Selig Center for Economic Growth has correctly predicted a gradual slowing of the state’s booming economy. This year, the Terry College forecasters anticipate even slower growth--but probably not a recession. However, they cautioned that the oncoming slowdown “will look and feel very differently” from the past 24 months.


University begins $4.4 million expansion
of food science building

The university broke ground Dec. 12 on a $4.4 million expansion of its food science building on the Athens campus.
The groundbreaking ceremony at the plaza outside the building featured the grand opening of the recently renovated first floor.
The renovation updated the food-processing facilities and research labs. The renovation was the first phase of this project, and the addition to the building is the second phase.



Infectious Laughter

“. . . which brings us to the question: Is it OK to kiss your dog?”
Laughter ripples through the large auditorium in the College of Veterinary Medicine as 175 veterinarians look up from their thick binders of notes on infectious diseases.
They traveled to this auditorium from places like Brooklyn, Nashville, Clearwater, Silver Spring, Columbia and Dacula. They’ll spend 15 hours there this fall weekend in a continuing education courses. The specialist in infectious diseases and neurology at the podium is Craig Greene, professor of veterinary medicine. He’s doing what he’s done for the past 25 years: presenting useful clinical information heavily laced with humor.

Holbrook elected to board of American Association for the Advancement of Science


Karen Holbrook, the University of Georgia’s senior vice president for academic affairs and provost, has been elected to the board of directors of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the largest general science organization in the world.


Real-life survivor: Scientist’s research helps her cope with aftermath of plane crash


Sally Walker is a scientist. Scientists travel. That simple equation is just a part of academic life, where the presentation of papers at national and international conferences helps spread ideas and influence. On the return trip, Walker took a seat on a Singapore Airlines jet, which had an uneventful first leg to Singapore before heading to Taipei, Taiwan.


Road show

Karen Webb, associate director of admissions, is responsible for outreach efforts and minority recruitment in undergraduate admissions. She spoke recently with Columns about current initiatives aimed at increasing the number of minority students at UGA.


Exhibition of photographs

As part of the 40th anniversary commemoration of the desegregation of the University of Georgia, an exhibit of photographs from the archives of the Associated Press/Wide World Photos and Bettmann/Corbis will be displayed on campus.
