Academic Building renamed
The 169-year-old Academic Building was renamed in honor of Charlayne Hunter and the late Hamilton Holmes at a Jan. 9 ceremony marking the 40th anniversary of desegregation at UGA.

UGA, Atlanta physician join to create Ovarian Cancer Institute
A noted Atlanta gynecologist and the University of Georgia have signed an agreement to collaborate on a new organization that will give hope to women suffering from one of the most deadly diseases they face: ovarian cancer.
The new Ovarian Cancer Institute will combine Dr. Benedict Benignos quarter of a century in the field with the expertise of geneticists at the University of Georgia to explore new methods of diagnosingand ultimately treatingovarian cancer.

Mid-year budget plan includes $10 million for research facility
The fiscal year 2001 supplemental state budget proposed by Gov. Roy Barnes last week includes funding for new construction, technology, research and research faculty at the UGA. The supplemental budget is the governors proposed spending plan for funds now available above the original fiscal year 2001 projected income.

King Week events celebrate New Century of Dreams
Following the holiday on Jan. 15 in honor of the birth of Martin Luther King Jr., several events on campus will offer the community a chance to inaugurate A New Century of Dreams, the theme of this years King Week activities.
Carmical Foundation gift expands lecture series, academic initiatives
The UGA Honors Program will receive a $250,000 gift in honor of J.H. Carmical, a 1917 university alumnus and veteran journalist who died last year at the age of 104.
The gift will be used to create a fund to strengthen the Honors Program by expanding the programs lecture series and other academic initiatives, says Jere Morehead, associate provost and Honors Program director.
Montgomery, faculty leader in universitys desegregation, dies
Horace Montgomery, a retired UGA history professor who received the first doctoral degree from UGA and later was a leader in marshaling faculty support for desegregation of the university, died in Athens Jan. 3.
