Tokyo String Quartet to give free concert
The Tokyo String Quartet, one of the most highly regarded chamber ensembles in the world, will perform Jan. 26 at 8 p.m. in Hodgson Hall in the Performing Arts Center. The concert is part of the Franklin College Chamber Music series and thus there is no admission charge.
The quartet is comprised of violist Kazuhide Isomura, a founding member of the group; second violinist Kikuei Ikeda, who joined the ensemble in 1974; first violinist Mikhail Kopelman, formerly of the Borodin Quartet; and cellist Clive Greensmith, formerly principal cellist of London’s Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.
The Tokyo String Quartet has released more than 30 recordings, including the complete quartets of Beethoven, Schubert and Bartok. The ensemble’s recordings of works by Brahms, Debussy, Dvorak, Haydn, Mozart, Ravel and Schubert have earned numerous honors, including the Grand Prix du Disque Montreaux, Best Chamber Music Recording of the Year awards from both Stereo Review and Gramophone magazines and seven Grammy Award nominations.
Officially formed in 1969 at the Juilliard School of Music, the Tokyo String Quartet traces its origins to the Toho School of Music in Tokyo. The ensemble performs on the Paganini Quartet, renowned Stradivarius instruments owned and played by legendary virtuoso Niccolo Paganini in the 19th century.
The program for the concert includes Mozart’s String Quartet in F Major, Webern’s Langsamer Satz and Brahms’s String Quartet in B-flat Major.
