David Isay, an independent radio producer whose acclaimed audio documentaries and features are broadcast on National Public Radio, will deliver the inaugural Center for Humanities and Arts-Peabody Lecture on Jan. 31 at 7:30 p.m. in Ramsey Hall in the Performing Arts Center. The new joint lecture series will bring Peabody Award winners to campus.



It’s all just ancient history

Students who choose UGA’s May term study-abroad program in Switzerland will be able to participate in a medieval banquet, explore an ancient Roman city on bicycles and learn to make their own flint tools.




A new foreign league

In 1998, Keith W. Prasse, dean of UGA’s College of Veterinary Medicine, appointed a committee to examine international activities in the college. The committee created a multidisciplinary program to broaden and strengthen the curriculum in international veterinary medicine. Columns discussed the program with Corrie Brown, professor of pathology, who is serving as senior coordinator for international activities. She works closely with Julie Moore, assistant professor of parasitology, who is junior coordinator.



Open forums under way
for diversity finalists


Five candidates for a new senior administrative post created to foster institutional diversity at the University of Georgia will meet over the next several weeks with administrators, faculty, staff and students and participate in open forums on campus.



Musicians toot their own horn this week

David Jolley in concert, Feb. 2: David Jolley has been acclaimed as one of his generation’s most notable horn players; the New York Times described him as a musician of “remarkable virtuosity” and Gramophone magazine has hailed him as “a soloist second to none.”
Southeast Horn Workshop, Feb. 2-4:
This marks the first time the annual Southeast Horn Workshop has been held at UGA. Approximately 150 horn enthusiasts--particularly college musicians--are expected to attend.



Celebrating 200 years: Exhibition includes ‘treasures’ of decorative arts

Athens Treasures: A Bicentennial Celebration by the Athens Historical Society at the Georgia Museum of Art spans two centuries and four galleries—a visual celebration of the fine and decorative arts during Athens’s bicentennial.
Located in the heart of Georgia’s piedmont region, Athens is renowned for its classical architecture, its exciting arts scene and its university. University and town have collaborated on projects such as this exhibition since Athens was founded in 1801.



New insurance plans go into effect

The switch to new health-insurance and prescription plans on Jan. 1 occurred with only a few minor problems for staff and faculty members, though nearly half the university’s employees and retirees chose not to adopt any of the new--and less costly--options.
