Administrative changes
Three senior communications staff members assume new positions
Three senior members of the university’s communications staff have new job titles and responsibilities, according to announcements from Senior Vice Presidents Karen Holbrook and Kathryn Costello.
Tom Jackson, formerly executive director of university communications, has been named associate vice president for public affairs. Sharron Hannon, formerly news service director, is now special assistant to the provost. Chuck Toney, a project coordinator in the communications director’s office, succeeds Hannon as news service director.
In his new role, Jackson assumes responsibility for the overall external image of the institution, with particular attention to marketing research and promotion in support of development, government and community relations, alumni relations and public relations efforts. He will advise the administration, faculty and staff on a wide range of higher education and institutional relations matters and will continue as UGA spokesperson on news and policy matters. University Communications units, including the news service, publications, broadcast/photography and visitors center, continue under his direct supervision.
Hannon will work directly with Holbrook and other senior administrators in academic and instructional affairs on special projects, including institutional events and initiatives. She joined UGA as editor of Columns in 1989 and became news service director in 1992. Under her leadership, Columns expanded from biweekly to weekly publication and university news offerings moved extensively onto the Web with the launching of UGA Today and other sites.
Toney’s new role includes responsibility for institutional print media relations and Columns. With particular attention to promoting the goals of the university’s strategic plan, he will seek to publicize the work of faculty, staff and students to audiences internal and external, from local to national. A former newspaper editor, press secretary to U.S. Rep. Don Johnson and public information director at Clemson University, Toney came to UGA in 1999 to provide writing support to President Michael F. Adams, a responsibility he will maintain in his new position.
