University Theatre presents Salman Rushdie’s Haroun and the Sea of Stories
Salman Rushdie’s Haroun and the Sea of Stories will be presented at the Cellar Theatre in the Fine Arts Building on Feb. 7–10 at 8 p.m. and on Feb. 10 and 11 at 2:30 p.m.
Controversial Indian-born novelist Salman Rushdie tells of one boy’s journey to the Sea of Stories, where he finds that his father’s outlandish yarns are not only true but also alive. The tale is a classic in the manner of Alice in Wonderland or the Wizard of Oz and features an imaginative style of storytelling employing fantasy and high-spirited humor.
Adapted for the stage by Tim Supple and David Tushingham, the play will be directed by Freda Scott Giles. The energetic mix of graduate and undergraduate actors will present the story as seen through a child’s imagination. In the physically non-realistic staging, the actors portray multiple characters and even become the stage furniture and props. The Saturday matinee will accommodate kids of all ages.
Tickets for Salman Rushdie’s Haroun and the Sea of Stories are $10 for regular admission and $8 for students and senior citizens. The Saturday matinee will feature $5 tickets for children under 12. Tickets are on sale at the University Theatre box office in the lobby of the Fine Arts Building. Box office hours are noon–5 p.m., Monday–Friday. During those hours, the box office can be reached at 542-2838. If available, tickets may also be purchased one hour prior to showtime at the Cellar Theatre.
