The association is designed to enrich the college experience for UGA students and their families, and the fund is supported by annual gifts from members. Grant requests should consist of a one- to two-page letter, specifying the need and explaining how the funding will benefit current undergraduate students. Funded projects must occur or be initiated no later than June 30, 2002; requests should include a time line for the proposed event or program. In addition, the request for funding should include a project budget, with the portion to be funded by the Parents and Families Fund clearly designated. A maximum of three pages of supporting material or letters of support may also be submitted.

Weight-control program
The Oconee and Clarke County Extension offices are offering a 9-week weight-control program called Walk-a-Weigh beginning Feb. 15 at 7 p.m. at the Oconee County extension office on Water Street in Watkinsville. The program emphasizes exercise, and the majority of each session will focus on walking. There will also be brief presentations on related subjects, such as using vitamin and mineral supplements, maintaining weight loss, substituting herbs and spices for salt, understanding nutrition labels and reducing fat in recipes. Participants will be encouraged to meet informally and walk together between the weekly sessions. For more information or to enroll, call Penny Thompson, 769-3946. Deadline for enrollment is Feb. 12.

Research participants needed
For a research study concerning the effect of strength training on insulin sensitivity, a UGA graduate student is looking for healthy 55–75-year-old males and females who are not currently involved in a structured exercise program. Participants will gain valuable information on their risk for developing diabetes and learn how strength training can help reduce their risk. Participants will have their blood glucose and insulin measured, learn proper weight-lifting techniques, and receive information on the effect of resistance exercise on the effectiveness of the hormone insulin in removing sugar from the blood. For more information, call Kristie Skinner, 583-0223.

Bulletin Board is limited to announcements from campus-based organizations whose membership includes UGA faculty and/or staff. Send notices by e-mail, campus mail (A-205 Stegeman Coliseum, Campus Mail 4371) or fax (542-8020).
