| USC students participate in hiring Students will now have the opportunity to help make hiring decisions about prospective faculty members in the history and comparative literature departments at the University of Southern California. Top job candidates at the university are invited to the campus and asked to give guest lectures. Under a new pilot program, departmental committees in charge of hiring will recruit a select group of students to attend the candidates lectures and provide them with feedback. USC officials say they hope the students feedback will allow them to make more complete evaluations in the hiring process. Congress increases Pell budget The U.S. Congress has re-authorized a bill that raises the total Pell Grant budget to $8.8 billion, up 15 percent from last year. This increase gives students an additional $450 for the maximum grant amount. For an academic year, students will now be allowed up to $3,750. The additional money is a result of the Higher Education Bill passed in 1965 that originally created the federal loan program funded by taxpayers money. The bill must be re-authorized every five years. Sharon Coar |
