Greek Park housing concepts under discussion
Student Affairs officials plan to meet in April with fraternity leaders, alumni and house corporations to discuss the concept of building a “Greek Park.” For more than two years, discussions have been under way to relocate on-campus fraternity houses, and possibly sororities, if they desire to participate, onto a contiguous area of land on university property. A number of potential sites are being examined.
After an anonymous posting on a local environmental group’s e-mail discussion list, the university confirmed last week that at least 12 potential sites for a Greek Park have been identified, with four being carried forward to the stage of preliminary feasibility sketches. Those sites are: Finley Street near the high-rise residence halls; South Milledge Ave. adjacent to the women’s athletics complex; and two sites within the intramurals complex, one on the western end of Lake Herrick and the other at the very southwest corner where the Athens Perimeter meets the Norfolk Southern Railroad.
“All such discussions are very preliminary,” says UGA spokesman Tom Jackson. “Greek leaders are still pondering the Greek Park concept and Student Affairs leaders have not yet had the chance to discuss these specific ideas with them. There’s much to do yet before anything concrete happens at one of these sites or another not yet identified.”
