Checking out urban legends
www.snopes2.com
This site is an invaluable resource in a world in which rumor is painted full of wings along with tongues, flying through cyberspace faster than truth can catch it.
E-mails that begin “Did you know that” should be considered a hint to check the urban legend database here. Type the word “cat” in the search box, for instance, to find that the legend about cats asphyxiating babies is unsubstantiated, complete with references and the name of the writer.
Members of Congress do contribute to and receive benefits from Social Security. Nor is there evidence that robbers (or gang members) hide under cars in shopping mall parking lots with a razor to slash the ankles of unsuspecting car owners.
Check here before passing on a rumor.
