Press book is award finalist
A book of essays by nationally acclaimed poet Sherod Santos published by the University of Georgia Press in 2000 has been nominated for the National Book Critics Circle Award in criticism.
A Poetry of Two Minds is one of five finalists for the award, which is also given in fiction, non-fiction, biography/autobiography and poetry. Press Executive Editor Barbara Ras originated and edits a series called “The Life of Poetry: Poets on the Art and Craft,” of which the Santos book is part.
“The book is so brilliant and beautifully felt,” says Ras. “It is knowledgeable and graceful, written by someone in love with the layers and magic of poetry.”
In A Poetry of Two Minds, Santos examines the history of Western poetry, from classical myths to modern forms. He discusses the art of literary translation, the connection between poetry and memory and examines the work of such poets as Robinson Jeffers and Elizabeth Bishop—among many topics.
Poet and former U.S. Poet Laureate Mark Strand calls the book “the best and clearest defense of poetry for our time.”
The National Book Critics Circle Awards will be presented March 12 at the group’s annual meeting in New York City.

Governor appoints two to regents board
Gov. Roy Barnes has appointed Michael J. Coles of Kennesaw and Allene H. Magill of Dalton to the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia.
Coles, founder and chairman emeritus of the Great American Cookie Company, succeeds Kenneth W. Cannestra of Atlanta in representing the 6th Congressional District. Coles serves on the board of trustees of the Walker School and Kennesaw State University. An active philanthropist, Coles was honored in 1995 as Georgia Philanthropist of the Year by the National Society of Fund Raising Executives.
Magill, who succeeds Edgar L. Jenkins of Jasper in representing the 9th Congressional District, is the newly appointed superintendent of Dalton Public Schools. She won high praise for revamping Forsyth County Schools during her five years there as superintendent. Magill, who also served as superintendent of the Paulding County School System, has been named twice as Georgia School Superintendent of the Year, including in 2000.
A former president of the Georgia Association of Educational Leaders, Magill has
30 years in public education and is a member of the board of directors of the Georgia Partnership for Excellence in Education
“I am grateful that these two individuals have agreed to serve on the board of regents,” Barnes says. “Michael Coles brings a true commitment to education and a great business sense to the table. Allene Magill’s years of experience in the state’s school systems will make her an invaluable asset to the board.”
