New state flags ordered
With the adoption of the new Georgia state flag on Jan. 31, Gov. Roy E. Barnes also issued an executive order that all state agencies and other units required by law to fly the state flag should continue to use the former state flag until supplies of the new one become available. The University of Georgia flies the state flag at some 20 locations across the Athens campus and at facilities throughout the state. The procurement office has ordered new flags through the Secretary of State’s office, and they will be displayed immediately upon delivery.

Classics prof wins Fulbright Fellowship
Charles Platter, an associate professor of classics and a member of the UGA faculty since 1987, has been named winner of a Fulbright Fellowship. He will spend a semester during the 2001-2002 academic year lecturing at
the University of Lisbon in Portugal.
Platter will lecture on the work and ideas of noted 20th-century French philosopher Michel Foucault.
“Foucault made a conscious attempt to
apply his work to classical antiquity,” says Platter. “I plan to use Foucault’s work to help focus on the formation of ethical identity in the classical period.”
Platter, whose research interests include Greek comedy, literary theory and Latin elegy, received his bachelor’s degree in English from Grinnell College in Grinnell, Iowa, and his master’s and doctoral degrees in Greek and classics respectively, both from the University of North Carolina. He came to UGA as an instructor in 1987 and was hired as an assistant professor in 1990, then promoted to associate professor in 1996.
He has edited several volumes and just completed the book Carnivals of Genre in Ariophanic Comedy. One volume he edited, Rethinking Sexuality: Foucault and Classical Antiquity, will supply background for Platter’s lectures in Portugal.
The Fulbright Program, recognized as the U.S. government’s flagship program in international educational exchange, was proposed to the U.S. Congress in 1945 by then-freshman Sen. J. William Fulbright of Arkansas, who viewed the proposed program as a much-needed vehicle for promoting “mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries of the world.”
Fulbright grants are made to U.S. citizens and nationals of other countries for a variety of educational activities, primarily university lecturing, advanced research, graduate study and teaching in elementary and secondary schools.
The program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.

Business senior named to academic team
Amy Mulkey, a senior in the Terry College of Business, is one of 105 students named to USA Today’s All-USA College Academic Team. The newspaper announced the selections in its Feb. 15 edition.
Mulkey, a Foundation Fellow who graduates in May with a major in management information systems, was named honorable mention on the all-academic team and is the lone student from a Georgia college or university on the list.
The Gainesville, Ga., native was nominated by UGA Honors Program Director Jere Morehead. Mulkey’s selection was based in large part on her work in the classroom and with the Panhellenic Council, where she has been an advocate for standards set for UGA sororities.
“I’ve been in the Greek system for four years, and I want to see it continue to prosper,” Mulkey says. “This is quite an honor, and I wasn’t expecting it. There are a lot of great leaders here at UGA who make things like this possible for our student body.”
This is the 12th All-USA College Academic team involving four-year universities. The college awards program started in 1990.
