
Former Soviet president to receive
Delta Prize for Global Understanding
Mikhail S. Gorbachev, former president of the Soviet Union, has been chosen as the 2001 recipient of the Delta Prize for Global Understanding.
Gorbachev, winner of the 1990 Nobel Peace Prize, will be honored for his efforts to end the arms race and Cold War, and his humanitarian and environmental work in their aftermath.

It just didnt add up
American students progress toward proficiency in mathematics requires major changes in instruction, curricula and assessment in the nations schools, says Jeremy Kilpatrick, Regents Professor of Mathematical Education at UGA, who headed a study on math learning for the National Research Council of the National Academies. To help schoolchildren successfully develop all aspects of mathematics learning, a coordinated and systematic approach to mathematics education from pre-kindergarten through eighth grade is critical.

Undergraduate research projects
to be displayed at annual symposium
In order to provide a more fulfilling learning experience for UGA students, the Honors Program offers undergraduates the opportunity to share their research projects. The universitys Center for Undergraduate Research Opportunities is sponsoring the second annual CURO Symposium Feb. 26-28, during which students will present their research work.

Gov. Roy Barnes
will deliver Commencement address
Gov. Roy E. Barnes will speak at spring semester Commencement May 12. Barnes, who earned bachelors and law degrees at UGA, will speak at the ceremony for undergraduates at 9:30 a.m. in Sanford Stadium. In case of rain, the ceremony will be held in Stegeman Coliseum in two sessions, at 9:30 and 11:30 a.m.

Womens History Month observance celebrates womens friendships
The theme for this years Womens History Month events at UGA is Gal Pals and Bosom Buddies: Celebrating Womens Friendships. Womens History Month will kick off on March 1 with a day devoted to women in the arts, followed by a celebration of international women on March 2. Events will resume on March 9 following spring break and will include such varied activities as film screenings, lectures, panel discussions and concerts.
