Arkansas bar modifies exam
The Arkansas Supreme Court has approved scoring changes for the state bar exam. The University of Arkansas School of Law and the William H. Bowen School of Law-Little Rock had petitioned the court to modify the conversion formula used in scoring. Pass rates had dropped from 69 percent in 1999 to 49 percent in 2000. The bar examination consists of an essay section and an objective portion, and school officials argued that the original formula emphasized the essay section more. The new formula is intended to reflect the students’ overall performance better and thus improve scores.

Brandeis adds Internet degree
Brandeis University is adding a new Internet studies degree to its liberal arts curriculum. The program will include computer science, law, economics and courses from related fields. Innovative new courses like “Virtual Opera,” “Visual Culture” and “Law and Society in Cyberspace” will also be included in the program. The program will offer the first liberal arts degree in Internet studies at an American university. University officials cite the widespread popularity of the Internet as the main reason for creating the program.
