Political science professor is named director of Institute of Higher Education

Delmer D. Dunn, Regents Professor of Political Science and former associate vice president for academic affairs, has been named director of UGA’s Institute of Higher Education. Pending approval by the University System of Georgia Board of Regents, Dunn will become director July 1, succeeding Ronald Simpson, acting director for the last two years, who is retiring in June.
The Institute of Higher Education, an interdisciplinary unit started in 1964, conducts studies on the functions and processes of colleges, universities and state educational systems. The institute works with other agencies on the development of higher education and prepares graduate students for careers as faculty and administrators in colleges, universities and educational agencies.
Faculty in the institute teach courses, conduct research, publish and administer several professional-development programs. They include the Governor’s Teaching Fellows Program, which helps professors from throughout Georgia develop innovative instructional methods; the Postdoctoral Teaching Fellows Program, which helps graduate students develop better teaching skills and improve personal scholarship; and Faculty Development in Georgia, which for 36 years has helped college teachers pursue doctoral degrees.
Dunn, who joined the political science department in 1967 as an assistant professor, was director of UGA’s Institute of Government from 1973 to 1982, and has also been acting head of the political science department.
While serving as associate vice president for academic affairs from 1988 to 1991, he helped develop a new academic assistance program and establish policies for review and assessment of undergraduate and graduate education programs.
Tom Dyer, vice president for instruction, says Dunn’s varied academic background well qualifies him for his new position.
“Del’s combination of scholarly expertise and administrative experience ideally suits him to lead the institute,” Dyer says. “He is a person of great talent who has earned the universal respect of the university community.”
