WAYNE PEACOCK
Network Services Specialist IV
Provost’s and President’s offices

YEARS IN CURRENT POSITION: Two.

JOB DESCRIPTION: “My job is to provide computer support for the President’s Office, but I also support the Equal Opportunity Office and the Creative Development Unit. I also provide secondary support to the Office of the Provost and its units. Generally speaking, I help people with hardware and software problems, teach an occasional class and work on Web development for some of the units.”

A TYPICAL DAY FOR ME: “I get to work on projects, or I get called away because of emergencies. For instance, someone could have lost a file or have a virus on their computer.”

MOST REWARDING PART OF MY JOB: “Within the technical community, we refer to the people we help as users. I really enjoy interacting with them. I also like it when I finish a big project.”

MOST CHALLENGING PART OF MY JOB: “Working with the users. When dealing with technical issues, 90 percent of the problems center around vocabulary. The folks who use the computer programs don’t know how to tell the technical assistant what is wrong. They don’t necessarily understand how the program works so it is hard for them to explain what is going on in a way that I can help fix it.”

OTHER UGA EXPERIENCE: “While attending graduate school to earn a master’s degree in education, I also worked in the main library, the science library and the bookstore.”

OTHER WORK EXPERIENCE: “I taught high school English for three years. I segued from that into technical support at schools. Then I worked as a technical coordinator in Jasper County for two years before coming to UGA.”

OFF-THE-JOB INTERESTS: “ I like war games. I also like to write and have actually written for some gaming companies. I have had some non-gaming-oriented poetry published.
“I also really enjoy reading--especially classical fiction.”

FAVORITE TYPES OF MUSIC: “Jazz, swing and lately bluegrass.”

A MOVIE I’D RECOMMEND TO OTHERS: Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

THE PEOPLE I MOST ADMIRE: “My parents, who came from Waycross, and ended up traveling the world. My dad, who was in the Army, and my mom took us to Thailand, Germany and Denmark--amazing places.
“Since I have children now, I can’t imagine having to tear your life apart every three years. But they did that, and it was great. I think I have a better appreciation for other people and cultures now.”

ISSUES THAT CONCERN ME MOST ABOUT TODAY’S WORLD: “The environment and the Middle East situation. It makes me sick how close they seem to have gotten, but that last mile, they can’t complete it. If it fails, it would be just tragic.”
