Venus approaches on wings of glass

UGA is switching from the original copper broadband network to a new fiber optic network called Venus, and the Electronics Shop is splicing and installing the fiber optic cable. Johnny Dillard (above) sets two fibers into the splicer, which will fuse together the glass of the cables with an electrostatic arc. Next to him, Tommy Bones coats a fresh splice with silicon. The crew is aiming for a 0.00 dB transmission tolerance (indicated at right), above industry standards, which means no loss of signal strength in these fiber links--fiber can carry 155 MHz while copper carries only 10 MHz.
