Construction begins on coliseum parking deck

Students returning from spring break found construction under way on the new 800-space coliseum parking deck. A construction fence was installed around the site, displacing some 350 commuter parking spaces behind Stegeman Coliseum. About twice that many temporary spaces are being made available elsewhere on East and South campus.
In addition to substitute parking in existing parking lots within the intramural fields complex, 350 temporary spaces have been created in a gravel lot on the site of the future Alumni Center on College Station Road at Alumni Drive, and 200 more spaces have been made available behind the parking services building on East Campus, in and around what is now an impound lot. The Orbit bus route is being extended into the intramural parking area for the duration of the construction project.
During March some parking may be allowed within the construction zone, but officials expect that by April the entire construction area will be closed.
The new parking deck will be built using a pre-cast construction method which is much faster than traditional methods. Officials expect the first four levels of the five-story deck will be open for use by the beginning of fall semester. Construction on the top level and on the deck’s facade will continue after the first four levels are opened.
“We understand that this construction will cause some inconvenience for commuter students,” says Joyce Hardman, manager of auxiliary services. “We are making every effort to find as many additional parking spaces as we can to replace those displaced by construction. We also ask that students parking in the intramural lots allow room for the buses to pass through so we can serve them efficiently.”
