Construction begins on coliseum parking deck

Students returning from spring break found construction under way on the new 800-space coliseum parking deck. A construction fence was installed around the site, displacing some 350 commuter parking spaces behind Stegeman Coliseum. About twice that many temporary spaces are being made available elsewhere on East and South campus.




Pining away

Since the first Europeans arrived in the Southeast more than 400 years ago, longleaf pines, the original forests of much of the South, have been in steady decline.
But Tim Harrington, a forest ecologist with the Warnell School of Forest Resources, and other researchers are involved in new efforts to restore and manage longleaf pines--and the wiregrass communities that support rare species like the gopher tortoise, indigo snake and red cockaded woodpecker.





Trial run

A growing number of countries are contacting the School of Law about its innovative international judicial training program, a joint venture between the Dean Rusk Center, the Institute of Continuing Judicial Education, and UGA’s Office of International Development. Columns talked with the program’s co-directors: María Giménez, the Rusk Center’s associate director for programs, and Rich Reaves, ICJE’s executive director.


$4 million Bradley-Turner gift supports programs in undergraduate leadership


A $4 million gift from the Bradley-Turner Foundation of Columbus will fund an endowed faculty chair and two new student programs in the Institute for Leadership Advancement at UGA’s Terry College of Business.
The gift is the second largest ever made to the Terry College--second only to the endowment given by C. Herman and Mary Virginia Terry in 1990. The Bradley-Turner gift brings total pledges and contributions for the leadership institute to more than $6 million.



Simpson, acting director of Institute of Higher Education, receives regents’ teaching award

Ronald D. Simpson, known as a “teacher of teachers” for his work over the past 20 years to strengthen instruction at UGA and in other Georgia colleges and universities, is a recipient of this year’s Regents Teaching Excellence Award.
Presented by the University System of Georgia, the award recognizes faculty members and academic programs at system schools for a “superlative teaching record” and a commitment to helping students achieve academic success.




UGA creates center to support
economic development in Georgia


Improving economic development opportunities for all Georgians is the focus of the Center for Economic Development and Community Affairs, a new initiative in the Public Service and Outreach office. The center’s goal is to provide business and government leaders, as well as the general public, an easily accessible method of tapping UGA’s resources and expertise, with a particular emphasis on economic development.



Sociologist discusses “What’s Southern about the South”

Southern sociologist John Shelton Reed, whose books, articles and speeches have helped popularize the culture, history and humor of the South, will present the annual Lothar Tresp Lecture March 22 at 3:30 p.m. in the Chapel.
