RPI receives $360 million pledge Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute has received a pledge of $360 million from an anonymous donor. The amount marks the largest gift ever made to an American university.
The school will use the money to create biotechnology and information technology programs that will strengthen current research initiatives and increase graduate enrollment, according to Rensselaer President Shirley Ann Jackson.

Virginia budget may halt building
Virginia colleges and universities will have to suspend construction of several multimillion dollar campus projects, Gov. James S. Gilmore III states in his proposed state budget. Under the new budget, salary increases for faculty and staff members and proposed spending increases for enrollment growth would also be halted in the 2001-2002 fiscal year.
A budget shortfall caused by a slowing state economy was the reason for proposing the changes, the governor said. The governor’s new budget plan does not call for any cuts in the operating budgets of state colleges and universities.
