LaVONDA CHEEK
Administrative Secretary
Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication

YEARS IN CURRENT POSITION: 11.

JOB DESCRIPTION: “I provide administrative support for a staff of five in Grady College’s Office of Undergraduate Services, which serves the needs of more than 750 juniors and seniors.
“I assist students in formally declaring their mass communication minor, compose answers to inquiries received by mail or e-mail about the A.B.J. degree, and I am the college’s contact person for class scheduling, classroom assignments and final exam scheduling.
“I also provide administrative support for Kappa Tau Alpha, a national honor society for journalism and mass communication students.”

MOST REWARDING PART OF MY JOB:
“Working with students. Most students are very appreciative and nice to know. I sometimes get really attached to them, making it awfully hard to say goodbye when they graduate.”

OTHER UGA EXPERIENCE: “I worked at the College of Veterinary Medicine for five years and at the School of Music for two years.”

OTHER WORK EXPERIENCE:
“I worked in radiology at both St. Mary’s and Athens Regional hospitals. I also worked for Brown Radiology Associates in Augusta.”

IF I WERE NOT DOING THIS JOB, I’D MOST LIKE TO: “I love animals, especially dogs, and in my spare time I do a lot of rescue work. I would do much more if I didn’t have a full-time job. There will never be enough time to help all the abandoned, abused and neglected animals in our world today.”

OFF-THE-JOB INTERESTS: “I enjoy exercising. I go to aerobics 4 to 5 times a week, and I like to walk. I also enjoy doing work with my church.”

FAVORITE TYPES OF MUSIC: “I grew up in the ’60s, so I am a big Elvis fan. I also like the Beach Boys and all the Motown groups.”

THE PEOPLE I ADMIRE MOST: “My minister, Dr. Ray Austin, and my doctor, Dr. J. Michael West. They have both truly been my lifelines.”

THE ISSUE THAT CONCERNS ME MOST ABOUT TODAY’S WORLD:
“Healthcare issues, in particular making treatment accessible to everyone who needs it, regardless of the cost.
“There is a tremendous amount of money necessary for research that is needed for debilitating illnesses such as cancer. With the Relay for Life coming up, I would like to encourage everyone who can to participate either by walking or making a donation. Cancer has touched all of our lives in some way, whether through a friend or family member.
“That is why it is necessary for all of us to be involved.”
