Conference honors old master
Noted teacher, poet, novelist and essayist Manuel Mantero will be honored March 30-31 with a conference on the UGA campus.
The conference speakers are all former students of Mantero and will come to UGA from 11 different American universities. Keynote speaker is novelist, critic and poet Antonio Hernández, who will be coming from Madrid for the conference.
We are meeting to celebrate the uncountable and valuable contributions of Manuel Mantero to the University of Georgia, where he worked as a professor of Spanish and Latin-American literature from 1973 until his retirement in August of 2000, says John Ross, director of the conference. Today in their classes, his former students use the sensitive and intelligent techniques of literary analysis learned under the tutelage of their old master.
The event will open at 10:30 a.m. March 30, in room 313 of Sanford Hall. The March 31 events will take place in auditorium 2B of the main library. For information on the event, call Ross at 542-1075.
Editor to give Yarbrough Lecture
Adam Leyland, editor-in-chief for PR Week, will deliver the fourth annual Yarbrough Lecture March 27. Leylands lecture, Ford, Firestone and the Feeding Frenzy, will take place at 4:15 p.m. in Georgia Hall at the Tate Student Center. The Yarbrough Lecture is held in conjunction with Public Relations Day, an annual event at UGAs Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication.
A well-known media commentator on public relations, Leyland has appeared on CNN, ABC and Fox News and has been featured in articles in newspapers including The New York Times and USA Today. His publication, PR Week, is the only weekly news magazine in the country for the public relations industry.
Named for Grady College alumnus C. Richard Yarbrough, the lecture series provides an opportunity for professionals, faculty and students to explore issues of interest with a leader of the industry.

Advocacy teams advance to finals
For the fourth time this season, the School of Laws advocacy program has advanced its teams to the final rounds of national tournaments. The law school has now secured a berth in the national rounds of two competitions: the Association of Trial Lawyers of America Tournament, held last week in New Orleans; and the American Bar Association National Appellate Advocacy Competition, to be held in Chicago March 29-31.
The law schools ATLA team was the only undefeated team among competitors in the northeast regional tournament held March 1-4 in Providence, R.I. Team members included third-year students Mark Mitchell and Michele Harris and second-year students Ryan Reavis and Shalena Cook. Second-year student Caroline Rogers served as their student coach.
UGA sent two teams to the ABA regional tournament in Atlanta, and both teams were undefeated entering the final round, which consisted of the top eight teams from a field of approximately 30 competitors. The four winners of these arguments advance to the national finals. The judges awarded the championship to the UGA team of second-year law students Drew Baiter, Lauren Sheridan and Tiffany Rowe. The UGA team of second-year students Mary Paige Tucker, David Adams and Ali Sawyer were narrowly defeated in the final round in a split decision. Third-year students Sam Burch and Laura Hill coached the ABA teams, and Holly Pierson, an attorney with the Atlanta law firm of King and Spalding and a former moot court member at UGA, served as their adviser.
We are very proud of our students efforts and the excellent leadership of advocacy director Kellie Casey, says David Shipley, law school dean. They deserve a big round of applause. |
